The guys I know who have become successful at catching steelhead are out on the river every chance they get, reading everything they can, talking to other fisherman who have been successful, trying new techniques, and soaking up every bit of information and knowledge they possibly can. They never stop learning and don’t get stuck into thinking they’ve got anything completely figured out. They are aggressive ongoing students and although they develop some confidence in their own personal knowledge of the fish and techniques used to catch them, they understand they won’t catch fish on every outing.
It’s the pursuit of the knowledge that drives them and the pay off is more fish than the rest of the anglers out there. It’s often been said, and I must agree, that 90% of the steelhead is caught by 10% of the fishermen. The goal is to become one of the 10%. There are plenty of guys on this forum who are in that 10% category. I agree with Jiggy that your learning curve will certainly be shortened by paying attention to what the guys are saying on this site and by hooking up with a seasoned vet. Good luck to you, and welcome to the board!
