Best thing you can do is head out to the river with a seasoned vet.... I wish I had that opportunity when I first started but much like you, I found myself learning on my own... I must have put in 5,000 hours on the green when I first started with maybe a handful of fish to show for it.  However, that handful of fish taught me the basics and I was able to use those same strategies in other rivers with higher returns and my success rate went dramatically upward.  Don't be afraid to drive a bit.  The peninsula streams are probably your best bet.  Watch others carefully (the ones catching fish of course) and try to mimic their presentation.  Walk the river bank as well.  Don't rely on one spot to spit out fish all day long....  After a bit, you'll have it dialed in and when you go out fishing for metalheads, you'll EXPECT to catch fish, not hope.....  Good luck in your endeavor.

The guys I know who have become successful at catching steelhead are out on the river every chance they get, reading everything they can, talking to other fisherman who have been successful, trying new techniques, and soaking up every bit of information and knowledge they possibly can.  They never stop learning and don’t get stuck into thinking they’ve got anything completely figured out.  They are aggressive ongoing students and although they develop some confidence in their own personal knowledge of the fish and techniques used to catch them, they understand they won’t catch fish on every outing.

It’s the pursuit of the knowledge that drives them and the pay off is more fish than the rest of the anglers out there.  It’s often been said, and I must agree, that 90% of the steelhead is caught by 10% of the fishermen.  The goal is to become one of the 10%.  There are plenty of guys on this forum who are in that 10% category.  I agree with Jiggy that your learning curve will certainly be shortened by paying attention to what the guys are saying on this site and by hooking up with a seasoned vet.  Good luck to you, and welcome to the board!  Kiss
