I was hoping to be able to fish today, but with the weakening conditions and my pet needing a trip to the vet I passed. I thought I might post some pics of some fish I caught last week. Andrew and I headed south hoping to find some winter chrome, but we didn't have any success doing so. Instead we both hooked into some later summer/fall fish. Not what I was looking for, but still made the trip enjoyable.
The first fish was an over agressive buck. On my second cast into what I thought was crappy looking water my float dipped under and I reared back. During the fight the fish came out of the water once or twice. Andrew made an interesting point that these later summer fall fish, no matter the conditions they still seem to be really agressive and aerial. During one of theh jumps the fish came unbuttoned. Since it wasn't a fish I was planning on bonking I wasn't concerned. I made another cast in the same lane that I had the takedown and what? Another takedown but the float quickly pops up. Ten feet downstream and the float is down again. This time the fish was landed. I'm positive it's the same fish, not an impressive specimen, but after hitting my jig three seperate times a crazy one!

We then hit a drift upstream and Andrew hooked up tossing a spinner. After a quick fight however the spinner flew out of the fish's mouth. A couple seconds after I tossed my jig and prawn in the seam, bobber down and another fish on. Again it's a fall fish, this time a pretty little hen

These fish made me realize that although they weren't the target, any steelhead is a beautiful specimen and makes for a entertaining day fishing! Grin

Nice report, Matt!  I wouldn't mind the photos being a bit larger (I've got kids older than you, you know laugh), but if you do that you should probably zero in on the fish, not the mug holding it!!! evil

Haha, Andrew took the pics, but I agree I should've made the pics bigger.

On a sidenote if conditions allow I'm without a fishing partner for Monday. If anybody has any bright ideas or just wants to fish my local stream with me I'm game.

Most times of the year I'd rather catch an old steelhead than a fresh salmon, and this is why. Probably a solid 6 months sitting in fresh water, mid-December water temps down near freezing with thick ice forming along the banks, these crazy summer-run were still aggressive as ever and full of aerobatic fight. Gotta respect fish that can do that.

With that said... man, I wish they would have been winter-runs.  Grin

Don't get too excited about Monday, Matt. Looking at the forecast I don't think the fishing is gonna be too hot anywhere. Might be a better bet to tie up some jigs.  Tongue

Yeah Andy, you might say I hydroplaned my way home from Joe's. Hopefully it comes down for next week.
