The surf hasn't been too great since Saturday, so I have spent a few days fishing....
Sunday 2/19 started out really cold, just as most of you experienced. (No frozen reel for me though.) Sunday was a bit of an expierment to see if I could find fish to bite in this cold tiny little creek, also to see how the wifes new waders would work for her. Her waders worked great and she was able to snap a few pics for me. I don't know what the air temp was but I had to borrow the wife's gloves a few times to re-warm my hands. Good thing she remembered to bring them. The creek water was 37 degrees and in some of the slower sections it was frozen all the way across. I opted for a hammered brass spoon, knowing the fish would be as deep as possible and slow to move. I hooked up with an old brat in a slow hole about 15 feet deep. This spot is probably the deepest water in this little creek, and probaly had a few more fish in it huddled together like penguins. With a super slow retreive the fish struck hard on my second cast. He put up a good fight despite the ice-box conditions. He was released in no time at all, and I quickly "borrowed" the wifes gloves to re-warm my hands. Then it was back to the car.
Monday 2/20, I headed to a big river I have never fished before. I was tempted by low water and the fact that access for boats has been denied to its upper reaches due to a washed out road. (If you know where I'm talking about, now is the time to visit.) It was much warmer today and the river was a balmy 43 degrees! Headed an hours walk upstream from the road closure. I decided to keep using the same spoon as the day before, cause of its potential for big nates and the fact it was already rigged up. Touched up the hook with a file and I was fishing. I found fish in unusual places (Probably cause I'm used to the smallest of rivers and creeks.) and probably overlooked several other fish. The water was so big, I felt like I was tossing a needle into a haystack. I landed 5 steelies of 6 hook-ups and 3 dollies. All the steelies were in the low teens with one probably 16lbs. I did measure one that hit 36 inches from nose to tail. I never really see fish this big, so my weight estimates may be a little off. The one I lost did seem like the bigger of all, go figure. I did try tossing spinners, but on that day, my hammered brass spoon from Mor-tac was the ticket. Snapped a few pics before the batteries ran out, of all days! (If the wife were there, she would of remembered spare batteries, doh!)
The pics will be posted below.

Here's Sunday's cold hook-up. (If you know the spot, zipper it.)

Monday's BIG water fish. The photo really doesn't do it justice, I think this is the one that measured 36". Stupid batteries!

Nice write-up, Juan. Great job! I know how you feel on the big water. I've only fished the "washed out road river" once (so far) and had the same feeling: where the heck do I fish? There is so much that looks "fishy" and so little time/casts!!!

Thanks for the report, I'm bummed as I was headed for your "big water" fishery Monday as well but opted for another less productive system instead ! Good job .
