Snow on the Hoh

I know a few of you guys have tried running a short dropper off of your jigs, and last year my first summer run came on "fifi" tied to a dropper off a jig. Here is another setup to try as your dropper. This is a single Jensen Egg on a #4 hook. I rig this by tying your basic egg loop, but increase the number of wraps so that your bait loop begins near the bend of the hook. Then simply insert the Jensen egg up onto the hook, and tie a short piece of yarn into the egg loop behind the egg. This will keep the Jensen egg from sliding down onto the bend of the hook. That's it, now add this as a dropper or fish it by itself. I usually pre-tie a bunch of these on an 18" leader and store them in little ziplock bags.

And if you are wondering,.... these really do catch steelhead! great

Love that idea Brian....the Jensen Egg is the most simple rig around.  I've had some stellar days w/ a single Jensen egg & a tiny piece of white yarn.

When the steelies have seen jig after jig go by....its "Mr. Jensen" that is likely to get picked up!

Would this be as effective with a small bead?

Are you talking about a bead rather than the Jensen egg? I'm sure Troutbeads and the sort would work just fine as well.

Great post Brian. I have caught many, many steelhead on the jensen egg and wool, I like to slide one egg up the hook till it is on the mainline just above the hook eye, and I always have 2 eggs attached to each other so one dangles free. I call this the "dangler".

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!  That is my secret weapon!  I've gone 3 for 5 on the past two trip running that under Over The Edge Tackle's dropper jigs.  If you want a little more room between the egg and the point of the hook you should try Gammy Finesse hook (shorter shank and bigger bend).  I've also done well on Nates in the spring on my favHohrite river when running a second egg placed over the eye of the hook.  I usually run this without the jig though.  Like Brian said, the key is extra wraps on the hook and a piece of yarn in the loop below the egg.  I don't knot the yarn however, the egg keeps it in place usually.  Regarding egg color, Jensen's cerise eggs are the perfect mix of orange and pink.  As the picture shows, they are also translucent and really seem to catch light well.

I used this but with regular trout beads on a clear river day. I used a carmel color bead instead of the jensen egg with a little bit of wool and Bingo first cast I caught mine.
