Snow on the Hoh

WWW
« Topic Start: May 29, 2006, 08:38:51 AM »

With the June 1st opener only days away, I thought it would be a good time to share your favorite summer run lures. I know we have done this before, but many new members may want to chime in. Here are my top five.

  • 1/8 oz. Red/black bead & yarn jig(My go to early season jig, usually tipped with prawn)
  • 1/8 oz. Black/cerise marabou or rabbit fur jig(My favorite from mid summer on)
  • #2 Tarnished brass spinner(low clear conditons, bright sunshine - fish the riffles)
  • #3 Polished brass/Kelley green spinner(cloudy days)
  • Black/red marabou leech on my bugrod(I'll be swinging these a bit more this summer!)

Anyone else want to provide theirs!

I just received some "summer run special" spinners from rvrfshr http://www.rvrfshr.com/ (thanks, Joe!) and expect they will be my favorites after a few well-placed casts.  I'll be sure to give a report as soon as I try them out.  Last year was my first at chasing summer runs and I did well with silver Blue Fox spinners in green, chartreuse, blue and purple.  I will be better equipped this year with Joe's spinners and a variety of jigs!

On the quest for big chrome steel

I'll be floating a kaleidoscope of JIGS along with tossing some spinners, and seeing as Joe has sent me some of his finest metal work, only time will tell which ones are the deadliest.
I'm liking the #3 copper with the trick blade sticker.
T minus 3 days to go.
Only question is, is the river low enough to float???, or is it a goat show??.
I'm anticipating a report from someone here on June 1st, I imagine myself and BCSteel won't be back till quite late, but hopefully we have some good porn to share.

For the low clear rivers i go with
1/8th oz nightmare w/ rabbit tail and prawn
1/16th oz purple marabou with red bead body jig
1/16 or 1/8th oz cerise/black marabou
and for the glacial rivers
#3 blue fox in Silver blue or all silver

I have tons more jigs but those have always been the top 3. I also pack a few spoons and black spinners but most of the time i can get by with the above.

Okay, here’s my main summer-run arsenal.  Jigs and spinners!

1.   1/8 oz bunny or marabou – pink/white
2.   1/8 oz bunny or marabou – pink/cerise
3.   18/oz bunny or marabou – pink/black
4.   #3 silver spinner with red tape
5.   #3 brass spinner (I’ll tarnish the blades for those bright days)
6.   #3 brass with Kelley green tape

Of course I’ll be packing plenty of other combinations of jigs and spinners as well! Wink

If I could choose the one "go to" method of fishing for summers I'd go with a number 3 solid silver....  Middle of the day, whatever, a properly fished spinner (solid silver in my case) is hard to beat...  A close second would be a trusty 1/16 oz. chennile nightmare tipped with a little sometn' sometn' (sandshrimp).  Of course you've gotta' have a few 4" seducers to offer the change up every now and then (yes, they are mighty effective in the summer, Andrew Grin)......  If the flows up enough and I can drift, naked sandshrimp or naked eggs will take fish every time......  CAN'T WAIT TIL' SATURDAY!!!!!  This place better be LOADED with pics soon!

1/16th and 1/8th oz. bead and hourglass heads with black and red feather and/or fur jigs.
1/16 oz. lead heads with various soft plastics slid up the shank.
Many #3 copper with brown tape spinners.
Almost as many 3/8th's and 1/4 oz. spoons in copper or brass.
Not quite as many but still plenty of brass #2 spinners with black bodies/tape and brass body/ blade #3's with green tape.
For good measure at the beginning of the season a few gold and copper #4 spinners with green and purple tapes.(Depending on system)
Pink and green fade size 10 and 12 or 12 and 14 corkies, double stacked on a #1 or #2 green octopus with no yarn but sand shrimp flavored Smelly Jelly.
Brand new 1143 (spinning rod) with 8# mono to employ with.

So rvrfshr what would it take to get a batch of those spinners. Do you sell them or should i just buy your spinners and tape them myself?
Thanks, Jiggy

I usually throw small dark jigs with some contrast built in or #3 brass/tarnished/black spinners (with or without lure tape), but I've heard good things about "san shemp stuffed up the tine of Mr. Wibbles," right Joe? laugh

Early in the summer when the water temperature is still cool I'll use bead jigs.  Red and/or black jigs are always good producers too.  Brass spinners with a green-butt skunk fly in place of the standard treble is another favorite.

My personal preference is small egg clusters solo or with a small pink or red corky.Next, sand shrimp tails accompanied with a small pink or peach corky.Night crawlers have also been good to me in the past.....I will also use double small corky's with a tiny amount of yarn in fast deep water. When it comes to hardware,I like a #2 or #3 black and green spinner.I will need to try jigs more before I can give any advice on  the color or style!!!  Good luck all.
