I have been kicking around the idea of putting together another Tutorial on jig tying.  I was thinking of either doing a complete tutorial on tying with maribou, or doing a series of them on certain techniques.  What would you guys like to see?  Dean

Greetings Dean:

I've tried to tie a few jigs using maribou feathers, but they don't seem to last too long. I would like to learn a better way to tie jigs using maribou feathers.

thanks,

Glad you asked.  I'd like to see how to tie a egg-sucking leeech on a jig.

I would like to be able to consistently find some marabou feathers that were worthy of palmering.  I usually spend $5 for a bunch of feathers with about 4 or 5 decent feathers.  The feathers I find are usually more adept at clumping which is fine on leaches and buggers and such but don't allow for the fuller profile.

There are a few kinds of steelhead fishing; fly, float, drift, spoon, spinner, plugs, boondoggin, bobberdoggin,.... and then there is float fishing in 18\" of water.  Put that in your pipe and smoke it! Afro

There is a start, I will wait a little while and see what other might have to add.

Mikey, try giving Bob Mariotts Flyfishing store a call, they have done me right in the past.  I called looking for some shrimp pink schlappin, and told them if it was junk, I would send it back.  I got some really nice material, that nobody else seams to carry.

Thanks Dean, have you ever tried the new product PSEUDO  HACKLE??  I picked some up and it is synthetic saddle hackle as far as I can tell.  I've created some really  buggy looking things and it's very easy to use.  It comes in a couple of sizes.  Sometimes it's a little curly but for steelhead jigs I like the sheen and random buggy look.  Something simple to use and different.  You can actually cut it to the length of "hairs" you like as well as taper it if you like.

Mike, I carry marabou, schlappen and hackle for sale.  I have three different suppliers that I get my materials from and the quality is the best I've seen.  These are the same feathers I use on my jigs too.

Mark that's good to hear because your jigs are the finest palmered marabou I have ever seen.  I can't believe you can create so many jigs that look identical with the palmering method.  If I have no excuses with the feathers, I'm afraid I may come to the conclusion that buying your jigs is my best method. Grin  Trust me, I have plenty of your jigs unfortunately I've bought them from GI JOes.  Hopefully it help you to have the stock moving in the retail stores.  Lack of time to tie before my only two steelhead trips the last year promped me to buy the best. Mikey, I have not tried it yet.  I have used different materials, but I haven't tried any synthetic hackle.

Mark, that is good to know, I thought you only sold jigs.

I used to have the same problem when buying from places like GI Joes.  Now I only buy from Patrick's (on Eastlake in Seattle) or Ted's in Lynnwood.  Much better stuff...almost all feathers worthy of a palmering.  They are a buck or two more expensive but more than worth it.  The spey feathers look pretty cool as well when on a jig.

Jonnyhook and I would be interested in a maribou or schlappen tutorial as well.  We picked up a new vice when the Antique Angler was closing stuff out and I'd like to try it soon!  We're getting pretty good at the Fish style beady jig and the rabbit fur ones (both learned here as well) and would like to take it up a notch!

I just got a new video camera, and I still have to get the editing software, and learn how to use it.  I will hopefulle be able to contribute some video tutorials here in the near future.

If your familier with bunny fur just tie in a small purple zonker strip tail and wrap a purple cross-cut rabbit strip up to the head of the jig and tie it off.  Paint the jig head pink or orange to represent the egg.
