can anyone tell me what colors and where to buy, for tyeing flies for silvers and cutthroat? new to fly fishing and a buddy gave me a fly tyeing kit, but i don't really know how to use it or where to buy any supplies.

Jake, there are many great books and websites that can help you get started. Just get a good book and start tying. It is really not that difficult to tie salmon and steelhead patterns that will catch fish. Here is a good place to start reading:
