hey guys. winter is quickly setting in up here in the north with several lakes already starting to ice over. Hopefully I can get out on Monday for a bit, weather permitting. i know you have all heard this before, but what would your top 3 steely flies be. I am just getting ready to do some winter fly tying and if I could find some new flies to tie up, then that wouldd give me an excuse to make a trip to the local fly shop for some materials. There is still some steel to be caught about 3 1/2 hours from where I live and the season is open until dec.31 so there is still hope for a few more trips but have you ever tried fishing when it is -20 degree celsius? kinda sucks but oh well. thanks for any tips or info guys. B7

My winter fly fishing box usually consists of some large marabou spiders or bunny strip leeches for swinging and a good assortment of glo bugs for dead drifting. Pretty simple but they get the job done.

Yea, I like the bunny strip leeches also. I do catch some using those pink bunnies you guys sell at Sportmans warehouse.

Fishing in -20 blows! It takes a special kinda of retard to do it and it sounds like you're a member of the club. As for flies, it all depends on what the water conditions are. If its higher water, bigger brighter stuff like skagit minows in pink, lower water small black flies. I absolutley hate small traditional stuff but that comes into play on the type of steelie you're targetting. desert fish will pick up those flies more than they'll eat the traditional coastal string leeches. hope that helps

Nice flies everyone I've got a nice little collection of flies going. A couple of somewhat rough 'GBS' and a few more that are based on the design in different colors. Also some oversized marabou flies, a bunch of bunny leaches, a few originals based on my jig designs. I just made up a pink worm fly because I couldn't find any designs online. Dean, if you ever get bored, feel free to post a tutorial on any of those bottom 3 But serously, if you could specify the materials used on those that might help!

great lookin' flies guys. what size do you like your egg patterns in, actual puff size and hook size? I really like the look of the orange GP and the purple spey. thanks alot for the help. I have been tying up a storm lately but I need to focus on a couple of patterns when i am fishing. i am used to matching the hatch, which doesn't seem to be the case with steelies, so I am leaning towards purple and black egg sucking buggers, green butt skunks and egg patterns. thanx again for all the info and pics guys. later.... I dont think one can go wrong with egg sucking leech patterns, proven effective yet so simple to tie. For egg patterns I like just using #4 black nickle octopus hooks, for some reason I dont think alot of the nymph hooks have a big enough gap IMO.
