Anyone been there yet? I heard from some folks that stopped in @ sportsmans last night that it was rather "disappointing" A little expensive and not yet adapted to fishing around here. Anyone else go to the card holders grand opening?

i got in with my dad, and i gotta say it wasn't all a fisherman would have hoped it would be. some prices are outrageous, some are so-so($5 for an F4 flatfish? cmon!). the hyped-up aquarium was a huge disappointment. one tank had a half dozen 3" bluegill, one had a couple fingerling largemouth that were gasping for air, and another was full of beat-up stocker trout. the fishing section is good sized, but like i said, most of the non-cabelas stuff is pricey and there's not a whole lot of steelhead/salmon gear. lots of stuff that you'd expect to find in the midwest -- cast nets, deer feeders, motorized duck decoys, all of it being illegal here. if you're looking for camo, that's the place to go, though looked like the whole town of bucoda was inside there wearing their nascar jackets and sunday best overalls...

I drove by there on my way home from Seattle the other night and was wondering if the reality was worth the hype. How where the prices on water boots and such?

.20 cents for corkies Lots of cool stuff though. I spent 2 hours and didnt come close to checking it all out. The clothing sections are killer. Lots of great waterproof gear. Sportco has them beat by selection of fishing gear though.

I heard on the news today that at any given Cabela's store each person that enters the door spends an average of 3 1/2 hours in the place per visit. That's almost as long as a round of golf.

~Mike~ There are a few kinds of steelhead fishing; fly, float, drift, spoon, spinner, plugs, boondoggin, bobberdoggin,.... and then there is float fishing in 18\" of water. Put that in your pipe and smoke it!

Hi Justin, Lana & I drove up for the card holders pre grand opening. Found out we wern't the only ones invited. It was packed. I agree the aquarium fish looked sick. The Rainbow triploids were sick. I was interested in fly fishing area. The big box stores have been blamed for some Fly shop closures. Personally, I don't think that is the issue. It was fun for the novelty of seeing it and I would like to try the cafe. I took a Ross spool and my own flyline and wanted to see if they could put backing on it and tie a nail knot. The man working the fly fishing section was knowledgable ( can't remember his name ) and had quite a bit of experience fly fishing for Cohos & Steelhead. I might pick his brain again.
Just talked to Eric, Let me know how you guys do on Friday.
PS; Got my second grand slam in Mexico and Lana caught her first bonefish------------7 on her first day!
Later, Jim

the guy running the fly area is john, he is a super cool dude. if any of you see him tell him " kramers a pimp" he will laugh his ass off. he has done some work for me over the years. he even worked part time with tom at fishy business. tom closed down his store and now works at cabelas. both tom and john are very educated on fly fishing.

Flyrod2, I'm curious what other reasons there could be for small fly shops going out of business other than outside competition.

Steelslayer, I would consider that one and the same entity especially since Cabelas does both.

I may be working the 21st. I'll know Monday. Congrats, DR! They'll definitely sell.... Congrats to you, too, John. Next summer I'm going to take you fishing in a river not 15 miles from your house and get you that first flycaught steelie. Hopefully I won't be far behind...
