I was explaining this on another board and thought you all might like to see it also if you havent tried it.
Basically bend the hook point away from the shank on the hook so it looks similar to the bottom hook in the picture,Usually Gamakatsu octopus hooks are to brittle to try to bend and you will usually break the point off The octopus hooks are the ones that are generally pointed IN towards the shank. When I was fishing the sound we would use Mustad 92553 stainless hooks although I dont think they make them anymore. Ok the top hook is the Gamakatsu, the bottom is the modified Mustad

See how the very point of the Gammi is pointed in towards the shank? and the mustad is pointed slightly away ?
Below is a simple test, Basically act like your thumb and index finger is the fishes mouth biting on a hook, slide the hook along your finger and thumb and see which one grabs better, And as it grabs the modified hook will force itself deeper as the octopus hook will actually hook shallow

ALWAYS sharpen your hooks after doing this also, This should work on jig hooks and siwashs also for plugs
