« Topic Start: December 22, 2007, 07:27:35 AM »

I blew work off on Friday and hit a little OP river.  I hiked upstream in the dark for almost an hour to ensure I had the section of river to myself.  Got my first take at about 9.  It was a hot buck that I was fortunate to land after it took off downstream in a shot of fast water.  I got a second bobber down about a half hour later.  This one was a super hot fish.  The moment it was hooked it took off downstream.  No head shakes or anything...just full speed back to the salt.  I was in a canyon and had no way to chase the fish.  Within about 5 seconds it snapped the leader...nothing I could have done about that one.  The last fish was a hen hook in the same slot that I hooked the 1st in.  She was a little spunky but not nearly as strong as the 1st two.  All fish were taken using my go to set up...a double Jensen egg rig under a float.

Similar to a Babine Special:
-octopus or finesse wide gap hook with egg loop
-one Jensen Egg (cerise) pushed over lower wraps
-salmon egg colored globug yard in the loop
-second Jensen Egg threaded on leader then pushed over eye of hook

-split shot on leader 8 inches from hook
-16 inch leader

By popular demand:

This one has more yarn than I normally use.  Notice the smaller egg (size 020) is the newer versions made in China and is NOT AS TRANSPARENT AS the older made in the USA eggs (such as the larger size 000 egg).  This make me angry.  Angry Angry Angry Angry

That looks to be a nice inexpensive alternative to a store bought jig, I like it!!

Couple of Q's for you...I have not fished with the Jensen eggs, do they stay in place on the hook the way you rig them when casting them repeatedly ??

Also, any advantage with the wide gap hook over the regular bait hook??

The top egg doesn't slide up the leader when pushed over the eye of the hook and doesn't slide down because of the yarn.  The bottom egg usually stays in place if pushed over the lower wraps below the loop.  That said, occasionally the lower egg will slide down and will need to be pushed back up.

Because this rig has the egg on the hook (rather than above it, like is the case when using corkies) it does reduce the bite of the hook.  There are two solutions to this problem...either use a bigger octopus hook than you would normally use or use a wide gap hook.  The problem with the larger octopus hooks is that they weigh down the eggs (slightly bouyant on their own) such that the rig no longer has neutral bouyancy (I am obsessed with having lures that have neutral bouyancy...more natural presentation...better action).  The finesse hooks are finer wire so they allow neutral bouyancy.  The problem with the finesse hooks is that they are not as strong as the thicker wire octopus hooks, so they are poorly suited for big fish.  In general, for brats I use the finesse hooks and for nates I switch to octopus.
