I just wanted to get a few opinions about personal preferences (split shot, hollow core, etc?) for adding weight to a float/jig set up.

I like taking a little chunk of drift fishing lead and just running that on so I can clip down any extra lead I got on nice a fast or if I change jigs.

Are you remembering to remove the black tube from the bobber stop, Rocky?  Wink

I've been using these type of weights http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10151&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&partNumber=15795&hvarTarget=search&cmCat=SearchResults

Lindy makes a version that I buy locally sold with the bass gear.

i have 2 ways i rig weights, one is split shot its stops the jig from doing the helicopter thing, and the other is hollow core pencil lead with the line threaded through it, when i'm fishing bait it works well because it get the bait down to the fish in a hurry and keeps it there.

Just depends on depth and water clarity. If clear water and under 8 feet, I like the new twist it clear floats with the blue twist it top and rig it fixed.

If deeper water, I like the west coast floats and the rubber slip off the wire bobber stops, a few #7 split shots and then jig, this keeps it down better in all water IMO.

I like cork floats for most regular fixed floats applications, except ultra clear summer water, then I go to clear floats and ultra light line.

6" x 3/4" foam float, about 2.5" to 3" of hollow pencil lead on the main line, swivel, 18" of leader, jig, bait, worm, etc. The free sliding weight on the mainline will slide up the mainline away from a thrashing fish and help to prevent torn out hooks.

Keep it simple, steelhead are stupid.

I'm with Oliver on this one. My setup is roughly the same, the differences are 4" x 3/4" dink float, 1-1/4" - 2" of 1/4" hollow core pencil lead fixed on a spinner shaft with #10 swivel on one end, 10" - 16" of leader(depending on size of water I am fishing) and jig, worm, bait.

i like those or drop shot weights, both used in bass fishing but work good for steelhead also. those drop shot weights also work well for backbouncing too.

I think what more important is the right jig. Grin

Here are a couple I just can not live without in the winter. chewy

I just tied these up tonight with some of Joe's(rvrfshr) 1/8 oz jigheads. These are my new favorite jigheads.

looks good spoony. i don't throw alot of nightmares but i know guys that say a nightmare is the only jig you need. they swear by them. i take it you have good luck with them too. i throw a ton of that fushia with a touch of white in the winter and do really well.
and yeah, joes jig hook really do the trick. Grin

Thanks Fishpimp. Ya, I have done well on the nightmare pattern for a long time, ever since KC{FishDoctor jigs) gave me my first one. It seems to always work, but being that I fish floats and jigs so much, I like to change up colors all the time anymore and try and find something even better. I guess I get bored sometimes fishing the same colored jigs, with that said those two colors above seem to almost always work for me.

Im not sure what type of jigheads you tie on Fishpimp, but typically my favorite has been 1/0 Owners, due to the little bit wider gap and longer point to drive through the snout then Gami`s in the same size. Ive always been a fan of the old Eagle Claw 630's as well, so the rvrfshr hooks are like a souped up model of that style and Im stoked about it.
