In a word: slow. Drifterat and I made a nice little drift in the lower river today and managed only three hookups. Of note, however, was that all three grabbed the globug dropper pattern aka "Fifi" in the low clear water conditions. DR, who is a self-proclaimed "jig purist", didn't hesitate to add one to his jig after I had a solid takedown/headshake in a cute little slot...first cast with a peach Fifi and he got my fish : From the amazing number of well-defined redds we saw, it is no suprise that the peachy-king color was popular with the steelhead. I laughed alot and had a great time even though the hookups were scarce...thanks again for the boat ride, Shane.

okay, hate to sound like a beginner, but what exactly is this Fifi pattern. Specifics would be greatly appreciated.

Great report guys. From the looks of the size of Drifterat's float, you were fishing fine and light. zonker

I hit the Nooch on on Thurs from about 11:30 to 5:30 without any hookups/takedowns. FS showed up in the afternoon, and same thing. We threw shrimp, eggs, jigs, etc. without any takers My only takedown with a jig was a SUCKER I did not know they liked jigs

FS couldn't have been on the river yesterday...he was in class, right Casey? And samdinger...the "Fifi" is actually a fly popularized by a guide on the upper Salmon River in Idaho. As you can sort of see from the steelhead's snout above, I tie them on #4 red octopus hooks and use bead chain eyes to add just a tiny amount of weight. The rest of the fly is simply a globug...I like peachy king, orange and chartreuse, and when I'm not flyfishing I'll often use one as a dropper by tying about 18" of lighter leader right to the bend of the jig hook. They look great just dancing along the bottom just below the jig, and they are most deadly in low, clear water conditions.

Yeah it's slow down there, but not surprising. Still a nice float. I had a great time. I became a Fifi believer for sure! Matt's pretty cool when he tosses bait... Zonker I don't think we were fishing small or light enough though. I have a feeling if we'd been fishing just a couple Fifi's under a smaller float we would have done better.

Nice report! I think those babies are the ticket with the low clear water! We used them quite a bit on the Hoh with no positive results, but hey, nomatter how great they are you still have to put them in front of some fishies.

~Mike~ There are a few kinds of steelhead fishing; fly, float, drift, spoon, spinner, plugs, boondoggin, bobberdoggin,.... and then there is float fishing in 18\" of water. Put that in your pipe and smoke it!

Awesome photos you guys, this low/clear water has everyone pulling out the "micro" stuff Guess one has to remain flexible to meet the whims of Mr Steel...good job guys!

Nice fish! My brother ties 'em and calls them egg reproductons, sounds cooler than globug. Tied on a lanyard to the jig hook?
