Ordered some size # 1's from Cabelas and got them the other day. They are very thin in diameter and don't seem very strong. Anybody have any experience with them? Can anybody suggest a stouter sickle style hook? I'd sure hate to spend a bunch of time tying on these hooks only to find out they straighten too easily.

I have also purchased the same hooks they did seem a bit flimsy Like Brian said Rvrfshr is the way to go. I bought some spinners and spoons a few weeks back the sickle hooks they came with are made of ticker diameter wire. Give them a try.

I've been trying Matzuo Sickle hooks for going on three seasons.  Some failed miserably others really impressed me.  So much so that all my personal jigs are tied on Sickle hooks.  If you've bought jigs from us this past winter it's the same Sickle hook.

Thanks for the reminder Mark. The How To Kits from First Bite Jigs offer you the choice of  Owner hooks or the Matsuo Sickle jighooks. Here is the link:

I have been using the sickle octopus hooks for drift fishing for the last three years.  Other then the fact that some of them are a little roughly finished around the eye I have no complaints.  Check for the burrs and use them.  I use them in the salt in 7/0 and have yet to lose a King on barbless as well.  Good product.

On a side note...  I must fight fish differently then everyone else.  The only time I have ever straightened out a hook was pulling something off of a snag.  How do you bend a steelhead hook on a fish?

Terrapin

It all comes down to the hook.  I test my gear to the limit.  Especially hooks.  I purposely try to see how far I can push the design quality of the product I m using...before I offer it to the public.

Here's one example of a bent jig hook this last season.  I was anchored off to the side in my cat.  I hooked a huge buck who proceeded to head for the ocean.  I was solo and didn't have time to move the cat so either get spooled or tighten down and break off.  I tightened down and the 1/0 hook bent enough for the fish to get free.

Other times, I'll hook fish and once I see it's a native...which is going to be released...I'll put the wood to him to get the fish in quick so I can release him as soon as possible...some times a hook will bend while doing this.

Mark,

Do you sell just the hooks by themselves?

rlh,

The sickle jig hooks that we sell at Rvrfshr are of a stouter design than the regular Matzuo sickle jig hooks...shoot me a PM if you'd like a couple of samples to look at.

I haven't tried the hooks First Bite is offering but I've definitely fished with rvrfshr hooks (both sickle and jig head) and I can say they are the absolute best I've used.  Afro

Not only do we have the hooks for any Canadian members but our new line of Cascade style spinners will be touting the new CUSTOM RVRFSHR designed hooks as well.

I think the RVRFSHR crew will have 2 make a trip up to test those hooks with me on a few of these

a few hunded of these

maybe catch a few of these

Someones gotta do the test runs on these hooks  laugh.

Those pics should make a few people crazy while our rivers rage, I think I better go lake fishing for some big rainbows or I'll lose it.
