Hot off the press from WDFW:

Quote
Carbon River re-opens for angling

Action: Effective immediately, the Carbon River will re-open to angling, reverting back to seasons listed in the 2008-09 Sport Fishing Rules pamphlet. This action will allow retention of surplus hatchery steelhead on the river.

Effective dates: Immediately

Species affected:   All gamefish.

Location: Carbon River, tributary to the Puyallup River, in Pierce County.

Reasons for action: Re-opening the fishery will allow anglers to selectively harvest hatchery steelhead, thereby reducing the genetic and ecological competition between hatchery and wild fish.

Information Contact: Hal Michael, 360-902-2659 Hal.Michael@dfw.wa.gov

I should also mention, I am a newbie to the board, and hope I have some insights to offer, and know that I have some to gain by being here at the notebook.  I have read a bit of the posts here, and this site seems like a very good community for fisherman of O. Mykiss and the five other Pacific Salmonids.

They must have gotten their 150 fish, eh?   Roll Eyes     Anyone else wonder why Voights is no longer in the escapement reports???

More likely they are giving up on the whole hatchery run in the Carbon after what happened to the hatchery.  I have a feeling that there won't be much, if any, plants in the carbon in the future.

Good for those of us that don't mind a CNR fishery  Grin

Ryan,

Just because the Carbon opened up doesn't mean we're going to fish there tomorrow.  laugh

Common Matt, don't you want to see what the Carbon is like when the Puyallup at Alderton is flowing at 3,010 cfs?  No... you are right, we are not fishing there tomorrow.

I was just sitting around today feeling depressed that the closest open steelhead river is an hour drive from here!!  Great news, I'll hopefully be able to sneak in a couple of quickie trips (about all I get now on full-time dad duty).  It's in pristine shape right now I hope Grin

They must not have a hatchery for the fish to return to so the sportsman will be allowed to fish and keep them.
From what I hear, the hatchery was pretty much destroyed. Not sure if they will rebuild or do away with the hatchery all together.
At least they had enough sense to reopen it.
Now if it would just come down a bit.......... Wink

Me for one. Wink  I expect to be down there one day soon to check out all the new changes. I tend to fish away from the more popular spots and hit the in between water that tends to be overlooked.

Welcome Barbless!

I fished it yesterday and saw a total of 6 other guys besides me.  Also had an awesome close encounter with a young bald eagle.  While I was fishing the tree swing hole, he flew down to the gravel bar from the tree he was sitting on.  Must have been about 20' from me as he flew past.  Even though I didnt see a fish all day it was an awesome day on the river!
