Speaking of another board Rossiman, I would take a barb over fighting a nate for 45 minutes because you're afraid of losing it on the barbless hook. I would also take a barb over 5 minutes of photos. I would take a barb over a fish flopping on the rocks. I fish barbless in my native fisheries and definitely subscribe to the practice.

~Mike~ There are a few kinds of steelhead fishing; fly, float, drift, spoon, spinner, plugs, boondoggin, bobberdoggin,.... and then there is float fishing in 18\" of water. Put that in your pipe and smoke it!

Whats wrong with keeping a Unmarked fish every few years? The word native is such a bs word. How many of those unmarked fish on the green do you think are truly Native to the river? Very few in my opinion. Keeping an Unmarked fish (one a year In the state of wash) Isn't why the stocks are down! So quit hating on the ocassional guy who keeps an unmarked fish. They only get one a year. If they choose. The god dang Native americans (I really wonder how native they are anymore) Pick them off by the hundereds. So whos the real A-Hole?

Good grief. In case you have not noticed you are on a pro c & r site. Not to mention the fact that nowhere in your rant did you come up with an argument that would be considered lucid. Share your views, lets debate, but think about what your typing before hitting the post button. You cant contradict yourself, then be generally offensive and expect to get anything but negative responses. So before this thread heads farther south than it should please keep it civil and use some tact.

The Green is a wholeeeee different scenario. Those summer steelhead aren't native to the river, and that is why its open. Now on the OP where there are native fish, brood fish, hatchery fish and the occasional 30+ pound steelhead, your intentions are up to you. But let it know that if you want to continue to have a fishery, c&r and a photograph will last allot longer than some skin mount.

As you know Codfather, I am not one to use tact when it comes to dealing with those people. In honor of keeping Brian's board clean, I will simply quote this simple add from our buddies Joe and Todd: Okay, I will try to use a little tact: Jig and Bob, you mentioned the word "Unmarked" in your post; do you know the difference? Genetics is a funny thing Bob... its really amazing what can happen when you remove numbers (even small numbers) from a small population. Try this same question on PP, I have to much respect for this board to continue posting to this kind of ignorance. No more tact left in this a hole.

I agree, time and time again people have the same views. Just last night two threads got shut down because they got so heated.... Native steelhead/salmon are important to alot of people, and most of us on this site are pro C&R. They are just to valuable to end up in a freezer or on a wall. There is NO reason that any river in WA should be open for keeping native steelhead.

i have to agree with rossiman on this one. they should close all rivers for being able to keep nates.C&R is the only thing i know when it comes to nates. hell i dont even like touching the fish cuz im afraid to hurt them. who cares if you got a 30lbs+ nate. they do make cameras ya know. take a picture (in the water) and let it go on its way. you will fill alot more satisfied knowing you could change native steelhead runs...for the good.

Here is my views: Unless we all come together the native Indians are going to keep netting the rivers. They have a right for 50% of the fish (Boldt decision), and sporties/non tribes are allocated the same. However if you look at the catch creels, you will see that the tribes are way more effective than us..... Nets!
If they adapt to more selective harvest, it would benefit everyone... I don't think the tribes are comprehending, that when the wild fish are all gone- they are GONE. We need to protect every single wild fish that we can. Sure the OP runs are healthier than Puget Sound runs.... However they are no where near where they should be, and they are in no position to be open for harvest of wild steelhead...-even 1 fish per year-
The Hoh river for example is under escaped, what does the WDFW do.... they go and lower the escapement numbers, and continue to allow for harvest of a fish annually, does that sound right to you? We as a group of fisherman need to take a pact, and do something about this.... Pave the way for a new way of harvesting and managing our fish stocks. I truly do believe that if the harvest of 1 fish annually on OP rivers gets changed, the tribes will follow suit. Hell, one day are runs may be plentiful again.... Wouldn't it be nice to have runs like Alaska's in WA,OR,CA? However just cause it is open to 1 fish a year, does not mean it is the right thing to do. We TRULY do need to practice good ethics and ensure that these runs remain intact. A picture lasts forever, and you can get a fiberglass replica made that looks alot better/holds up better than a skin mount. Plus wild fish on the verge of spawning/Especially winter runs don't taste all that great. Do your part guys, and lets get are rivers back to the good ol days.

Rossiman, I hate to complicate matters(I know Todd would have the exact info.) but the reduction in harvest to 1 wild fish per angler has been used by some tribes to actually increase their allotment. It is a term called "forgone opportunity". If we get 1000 fish and the tribe gets 1000 fish, then we decide to only take 500...then the tribe can take 1500.

Another thing.... Consider joining a organization, CCA, WSC or any other. Get together with your fishing buddies, take your kids/family/friends and even co workers out when the season closes and consider cleaning up the river banks/ picking up trash. Volunteer your time with restoring river habitat, educate the young fisherman and even the veteran fisherman why responsibly and ethics are so important. There are plenty of things you can do that truly make a difference..... Jig-N-Bob i really do hope you, and others with the same views as you: read all these posts (threads) that have already been discussed on these issues and consider that the killing of wild fish is a thing of the past, and we can not afford to do it anymore. That's what the hatchery fish are for..... Bonk them like Barry Bonds hits a baseball

Speaking of Barry Bonds, I wish they would give our hatchery steelhead some steroids. Haha, that would be nice! I am familiar with Forgone Opportunity, However i am still looking for the thread on PP, Where Todd and Salma G where discussing it. Maybe it got locked/Deleted.... Sure happens allot on PP. Edit: Found a thread that is interesting. Doesn't really pertain to steelhead: However it does pertain to Chinook/Coho Look at the harvest by the tribes, compared to us.... There are some interesting points in that thread, that's for sure. http://www.piscatorialpursuits.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/488868/1http://www.piscatorialpursuits.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/489288/Selective_a_matter_of_definiti#Post489288
