I just spent two straight days fishing with a really good spey fisherman.  I'm pretty good with the one-hander but this was my first attempt at spey casting.  Once I figured out it was simply a matter of getting the "anchor"(fly) set up in the right spot(with a couple different methods base d on whether you are river right or river left) and then a big roll cast, I was good to go.  The double spey cast is a much more efficient way to get your fly in the water on a big stream IMO.  It was a ton of fun and I enjoyed the relaxing pace of covering big runs that I would have moved through much faster with gear.  Hey rvrfshr Joe, what rod can you tie up for me to spey fish?  I'm very certain I won't be buying the $825 Winston(I tried a 13'3" 7/8 and a 13' 8/9) model that I got the privilege to cast for two days. There are a few kinds of steelhead fishing; fly, float, drift, spoon, spinner, plugs, boondoggin, bobberdoggin,.... and then there is float fishing in 18\" of water.  Put that in your pipe and smoke it! Afro

double spey and the perry poke is what i use the most, but spey casting in general is fun and it keeps you entertained between fish lol but its a blast and i love doing it, went down south to a river and spey fished today but didnt catch anything gonna go back on Monday Wink

Long drive...my solution:  fish half as often, and drive twice as far; that's a recipe for steelheading "shangra-la"! Grin

I live on the OP and often drive to Oregon to find fish and avoid crowds this time of year. If I lived in SW Washington, I would fish Oregon 95% of the time. An out of State License would be worth the savings on gas. Oregon coastal rivers are very similar to the OP, but don't get netted.  Shocked (The after angling meals are worth the drive alone  Wink!)

it would be super kick ass if the banned the netting over hear too cuz i dont care what anyone sez that has a huge effect on our steelhead period, and thats why of course oregon has great rivers becuase they banned that crap. We would be just as good as oregon if we did the same thing, we just need to get our crap together and try to bring back the glory days.

Anyone throwing any scandi line out there ? I have been thinking about getting some scandi line for my spey rod it looks fun lol i was thinking of getting some running line looped at the end and getting a scandi compact  head to throw around and maybe a compact skagit head as well, right now i just have the rio intigrated skagit line on my spey rod right now and now im thinking about summer time already and throwing something light around for a change instead of a big wonkey skagit setup.
