i use a tfo deer creek 13 ft 7/8 wt a rio skagit head 650 grain and mostly t-14 sink tips but i have all sorts of diffrent sink tips that i use. its a sweet stick i must say........best bang for your buck when it comes to spey rods in my opinion. whats about you bro, what are you tossing those intruders around with ?

dude lighten up on the skagit head! I noticed that you guys really over line rods big time. I'm running a custom beulah classic 8/9 and I found their tonic skagit 585 heavy, now i'm running a Airflo Compact Skagit 510, and i can easily throw 12ft of T-14 between 80-90ft. With a big fly on the back, not wool casting here.

I'd lighten up on the line, u'll find the rod way crisper, and you feel it load better. Overall yourcasting becomes tighter, and more precise. If you're ever up my way, i'll lend u the 510, and even my rod, so you can see whats up with the lighter lines. You're running a shorter and lighter rod, i'd got down a size. My buddy runs a burkenhiemer 12'6 8wt, with the same line. 510!!! thats where its at for most rods in the 7,8,9wt range between 12'6 and 14ft.

i was using a 550gr but did not like the way it casted at all so i went heavy and it works for me, my max grain on that rod is 700gr so i dont think im really over wieghting it, i dont know maybe its just what feels best for the individual spey fishermen ? the extra wieght on my line helps me feel the rod load a lot better then those lighter rigs, but i was always wondering about the air flow heads maybe that might be something to try soon ?

the airflo heads have taper, and they fly fast. My buddy owns a 14.6 9/10wt scott and runs 700. I'm telling you, come up north, and learn how to fish with the light lines, makes casting way more enjoyable.

airflo compact skagit 510. I'm in the process of ordering one for my rod. I have another line that might suite you well, if you enjoy its yours for cheap. I'll send it down to you as soon as the airflo shows up.

sounds like a possibility...also depends on what the old stuff is and what grain it is as well. Been shooting some line out at the cow lately have pretty good luck, its funny though i seem to always get a strike when i shoot the crappyest cast its crazy lol

lets your fly and sink tip sink deeper because its under no tension, instead of the perfect lay out and immediate tension.  Roll Eyes just saying.

the line is a 550. a touch heavier than you need, but right where it should be.
