I am new to float fishing jigs and need advice on selecting and sizing floats.  Is there some scale or rule of thumb?  I see some floats advertise a recommended weight but not all.  I want to purchase some Blackbird Phantom slip floats but I note they come in different sizes.  I don't know how to determine what is appropriate.  I have some 1/8-1/2 oz jigs.  I have some bulb type styrofoam floats but they don't seem very sensitive or tip much.  I don't know if this a good or bad thing since so much of what I read depends on watching the float and keeping in riding straight up and down.  I would appreciate any info.  Thank God for the rain.  This dry spell has been down right freaky.

A lot of this depends on how you are fishing and what size of water.
I prefer a torpedo shaped float, with a rounded top and an elongated point/bottom all with a smooth taper.  I find this style to be the best all-purpose shape.
Size depends (to me) on how much weight you need to throw.  If I am fishing strictly jigs I usually use a 3/8 or 1/2 oz rated float (25gr if metrically inclined).  When fishing larger rivers or for fishing bait to chinooks I'll step it up to a 3/4 or 1oz rated float.
There are lots of other threads on this this topic if you do a search, you'll probably come up with many more opinions.

I have been using the CLEARDRIFTS the last few years exclusively, other than summer time lows when i just use a round cork, and they work great for me. Grin
