Book Description
The importance of the early years in influencing outcomes in later life has been well considered. What happens to a child in their first five years of life, their physical health, the connections they form, the resources they have access to and the early education and care they receive can have lasting impacts on their future outcomes. This knowledge has led to an increased policy focus and investment in younger children, especially in relation to early intervention, childcare and education. Despite this focus children are still entering the world and growing up in circumstances where they face significant disadvantage. This report highlights the critical importance of investment in the early years, illustrating that disadvantage starts during pregnancy and extends through toddlerhood and in the preschool years, with significant differences in child outcomes evident across various domains including mental health, language development and early learning, well before formal school commences. The findings in this report draw out points in the first five years where evidence or data is lacking and where we need better policy responses. This includes a greater emphasis on making sure all children, but particularly those living in disadvantage communities, have full access to services and that both location-based initiatives and broader policy measures are put in place to break the cycle. Book Description
Times are changing. Instead of obsessing about what they’re against, progressives have begun to think about what they’re for—to prepare once again to play their role as agents of bold ideas and political and social transformation. Finding new confidence and imagination, they have begun to renew their political capital. The essays in this volume draw on that new store of capital to sketch the outlines of a progressive agenda for 21st-century America. Authors such as Van Jones, Dean Baker, Andrea Batista Schlesinger and Miles Rapoport cover a wide array of topics and, in their policy recommendations, present a few contrasting ideas. But all these essays reflect a belief in the need for fundamental change. The problems discussed here cannot be solved, the authors agree, through charity, through volunteerism, or even by well-meaning local and state governments, though surely all have a role. The contributors make the case for the kind of concerted action that can only come through the agency of our national government. They argue that we need programs that serve our national and international needs and encourage faith in our public institutions, creating a positive cycle of political change and space for further reform. There are many good reasons to be worried at this critical moment in history. To navigate these troubled times, we need a rare combination of ideas, action, resolve, and leadership to meet the challenges that lie before us. Thinking Big is an indispensable piece of that puzzle, arriving just when it’s most needed. With a foreword by Robert Kuttner, author of Obama’s Challenge: America’s Economic Crisis and the Power of a Transformative Presidency. The Progressive Ideas Network is an alliance of multi-issue think tanks and activist organizations working together to amplify the power of ideas in advancing today’s progressive movement.

Book Description
The Global Strategy for Women’s, Children’s and Adolescents’ Health calls for the transformative change necessary to shape a more prosperous, sustainable future for children and adolescents. To implement the Strategy and contribute to Sustainable Development Goals, strategic shifts are necessary in maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health programming. It is no longer sufficient to save lives: health and other sectors must contribute to improving their health and well-being, and unlocking their full potential. An approach to health and development that supports a continuum of care throughout life is therefore essential to promote survival, enhance well-being and protect children and adolescents against risks and disease. Programmes to improve their health and well-being must be universal, while identifying those at risk or who are vulnerable and giving them extra support and protection required. This Framework outlines the rationale, highlights the areas for action and calls for a shift in redesigning child and adolescent programming. It calls for whole of government and whole of society approach to life course programming to achieve a shared goal and integrated coordinated response to ensuring health and well-being of children and adolescents.
